The Liberian-flagged tanker Green Admire, detained by Russian authorities on May 18 after departing the Estonian port of Sillamae, has been released and is now en route to its original destination, Rotterdam, ERR.ee reported on May 21.

Although this is the first known detention of its kind by Russia, experts warn that similar incidents cannot be ruled out, particularly as Moscow seeks to assert its influence over Baltic Sea shipping.

The vessel had failed to respond to repeated warnings upon entering a maritime zone Russia has designated as dangerous. While this is the first such incident, it may reflect escalating tensions in the Baltic Sea.

As reported by bne IntelliNews, the Green Admire departed Sillamae on the evening of May 17, heading north towards the Gulf of Finland. In the early hours of May 18, Russian authorities intercepted the ship and escorted it to an anchorage off Suursaar – a Russian-owned island used for military purposes.

A safe shipping route through the Baltic Sea – agreed by Estonia, Finland and Russia – avoids national borders and has been used routinely. However, since 2022, ships have been advised to avoid Russian-controlled maritime zones due to heightened geopolitical tensions, ERR.ee said.
