Israel's military has said that two rockets were launched from Syria and landed in uninhabited areas inside Israeli-controlled territory, specifically in the Hasbain and Ramat Magshimim areas in the southern occupied Golan Heights.

Sirens were triggered at 21:36, shortly before the rockets crossed the border from Syria. No casualties or material damage were reported.

Minutes later, Israeli military radio reported that airstrikes had been launched on targets inside Syria in response, with Israeli fighter jets reportedly breaking the sound barrier over Syrian airspace.

"A short while ago, following the projectiles launched toward Israeli territory earlier today (Tuesday), IDF fighter jets struck weapons belonging to the Syrian regime in the area of Southern Syria," the IDF wrote late on June 3.

IT added "The Syrian regime is responsible for the current situation in Syria, and will continue to bear the consequences as long as hostile activity continues from its territory. The IDF will operate against every threat posed to the State of Israel."

Israeli Defence Minister Yisrael Katz blamed Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa for the attack, calling him directly responsible for any aggression targeting Israel. He warned of a "comprehensive response" shortly.

This is the first incident of its kind since the fall of Al-Assad last December. Following Assad’s ousting, Israeli forces took control of the demilitarised zone in the Golan Heights. It ramped up airstrikes in Syria, claiming to prevent the new government from acquiring advanced weaponry.

The Islamic Resistance Front in Syria, an Iran-backed resistance faction consisting of Shia Muslims and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP, has taken responsibility for the attack, confirming the launch with a video.

The Israeli army later stated that its forces were continuing defensive operations in southern Syria to dismantle what it called “terrorist infrastructure” and protect communities in the Golan Heights.

Meanwhile, Syria’s new authorities have repeatedly stressed that they do not intend to threaten Israel and have recently entered direct talks with Tel Aviv to reduce tensions, with U.S. backing.

US envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, revealed Washington’s intention to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, affirming the Biden administration’s support for the current Syrian government and describing the Syria-Israel issue as a “resolvable problem.”

Following the fall of the Assad dictatorship, the SSNP published a statement separating itself from the old regime, the group also called for confronting the ongoing Israeli invasion of Syria and has become a growing resistance force since the collapse of the former Syrian regime.
