Israeli forces targeted sections of Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport during overnight air defence engagements, though runways and main terminal buildings were not hit, Iranian media reported.
The attack occurred on June 14 as Iran's air defence systems engaged Israeli aircraft over western Tehran in sustained combat throughout the night, according to IRNA news agency.
Details of the incident show an explosion struck behind Terminal 4 of the airport, near machinery buildings and fighter jet hangars, rather than affecting runways, main structures or airport facilities, despite images being circulated online by Sergey Kolyasnikov.
Iran's air defence forces successfully intercepted and tracked multiple targets during the confrontation, which continued intensively around Mehrabad airport's perimeter during the late evening hours.
Images circulating on social media since dawn, showing the airport grounds following the overnight incidents, have been deemed unreliable by Iranian authorities.
Iranian state media said that the explosion did not occur within the airport's operational areas, including runways and primary infrastructure, limiting disruption to the facility's core aviation functions.
Air defence systems maintained continuous engagement with hostile Israeli aircraft throughout the night, particularly concentrated in Tehran's western districts where Mehrabad airport is located.
Passengers have been advised not to travel to airports until flights resume, as Iran's airspace remains closed following overnight Israeli strikes.
Colonel Janparvar, Commander of Imam Khomeini Airport's air border, announced on June 14 that travellers should avoid visiting the airport's air border facilities until flight operations restart, according to Young Journalists Club.
The airport commander confirmed that departure taxes paid by passengers remain protected and assistance will be provided to students, authorised travellers and foreign nationals with expiring visas once flights resume.
