Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi has ruled out negotiations with the United States or Israel following American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, stating that continuing talks would be "completely pointless".
On the night of June 21, US President Donald Trump announced that America had successfully attacked "three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan", calling on Tehran to agree to end the conflict. Israel had been striking Iran daily since June 13, with the stated goal of destroying the Islamic Republic's missile and nuclear programmes and potentially toppling the Islamist system.
Speaking on German ARD television on June 22, long-time diplomat Takht-Ravanchi said Iran does not want to negotiate just for the sake of negotiations when asked whether Iran would contact the US or Israel. The Iranian military “knows exactly what needs to be done,” the politician stressed.
His comments follow European and Canadian leaders asking Iran to return to the negotiating table, as the BBC reported Keir Starmer and Mark Carney saying earlier in the day.
Following the American strike on Fordow, former President Mohammad Khatami condemned America's violation of Iran's territorial integrity and international law, stating that aggressors seek to weaken and conquer minds and collective thoughts before destroying defensive, economic and industrial foundations.
In a statement following other officials, Khatami said the main goal of this imposed war is to destroy Iran's national capacity and the life of a unified Iran and cohesive Iranians.
"The union of evil and aggression is a union against the territorial integrity and precious civilisational heritage and independence-seeking and freedom-loving identity of the noble Iranian nation," Khatami stated.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei described the US attack as "a clear betrayal of the fundamental norms and principles" of international institutions, IRNA reported.
"The aggressive and unjustifiable act - carried out by a nuclear-weapon state, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and a trustee of the Non-Proliferation Treaty against a non-nuclear-weapon state - is a clear betrayal of the fundamental norms and principles that these institutions represent," Baqaei wrote.
The spokesperson said it is now clear that the US government has colluded with "a war criminal and genocidal warmonger" to wage aggressive war against Iran in violation of international law, the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
