The Kosovo parliament building was evacuated on July 5 following a bomb threat, just before an attempt to hold the long-delayed constitutive session of the newly elected parliament, a statement from the parliament said.
The incident came amid a deepening political impasse. Despite Vetevendosje, led by acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, winning the most seats in the February 9 general election, it fell short of a majority to form a new government alone. Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to elect a new speaker, with attempt on July 5 being the 42nd unsuccessful constitutive session.
“The constitutive session of the Assembly, continuing today, began with the announcement by speaker Avni Dehari about the threatening phone call about a bomb in the Assembly building, during the morning, which imposed the interruption of the session scheduled for 11:00 and its convocation for 20:00, after checks carried out by the explosive ordnance disposal team,” said a statement from the parliament.
The Constitutional Court ruled on June 26 that the Assembly must elect its leadership within 30 days, but the ongoing stalemate and now the bomb threat continue to paralyse the legislative process.
Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) MP Abelard Tahiri, was cited by Koha.net as saying that police had ordered the immediate evacuation of all personnel from the premises.
"There is a threat, possibly a bomb. The police, due to security measures, have said that the staff should be evacuated. There is a threat, I don't know any further, the police need to provide clarification," Tahiri said.
Time Kadrijaj, MP from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), downplayed the threat, saying she did not believe MPs were in real danger. "What is happening is completely senseless. Maybe it is a deliberate phone call to keep MPs away from the Assembly. No normal person attacks the Assembly," she told Koha.net.
Glauk Konjufca, an MP from the Vetevendosje Movement, said the threat was communicated via a phone call and confirmed that all parliamentary groups had complied with the evacuation order.
