A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Sarkheh in Iran's Semnan province on June 20 at 21:19 local time, with tremors felt across Tehran, Qom and surrounding areas.
Iran sits on major fault lines and experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth, which typically increases the intensity of ground shaking felt at the surface.
The earthquake occurred at coordinates 53.02 degrees east and 35.45 degrees north at a depth of 10 kilometres, Tasnim news agency reported from Semnan.
Residents in Tehran, Semnan, Firoozkooh, Kilan, Qom and several other cities felt the tremors from the seismic event.
The Red Crescent Society of Semnan province dispatched two assessment teams to the earthquake's epicentre to evaluate potential damage.
Hussein Darakhshan, managing director of Semnan province's Red Crescent Society, told Tasnim that no information about possible casualties or damage was immediately available.
"Immediately after this earthquake occurred, a rapid response team from Red Crescent rescuers was dispatched from Sarkheh city to the south of this city, which was the earthquake's centre," Darakhshan said.
A second assessment team was subsequently sent from Semnan to the affected area, according to the Red Crescent official.
The organisation maintains full readiness to provide all necessary relief services to earthquake victims if required, Darakhshan added.
The earthquake struck 17 kilometres from Sarkheh city, 36 kilometres from Semnan city and 41 kilometres from Firoozkooh in Tehran province.
The nearest provincial centres to the earthquake were Semnan at 36 kilometres distance and Sari at 124 kilometres away.
Tremors were also felt in Damavand, Rey, Tehran, Karaj and Qom, according to seismological reports.
