All foreign personnel working at Iraq's Joint Operations Command headquarters in Baghdad were evacuated on March 23 aboard military cargo aircraft that had arrived at Iraqi bases two days earlier, a source told Baghdad Today.

The evacuation was carried out under heightened security measures and coincided with the clearance of other sensitive sites in the area, the source said.

In a further development on March 23, Al Jazeera reported that international coalition military advisers had begun withdrawing from the Joint Operations Command and its support camp to Jordan, with the pullout covering all remaining advisory staff.

The departure marks the effective end of the international coalition's physical presence at Iraq's central military command, more than a decade after foreign forces first deployed to support Baghdad in the fight against ISIS.

Iraq has been caught in the middle of the regional conflict since its outbreak on February 28, with Iranian missiles, drones and US-Israeli aircraft crossing its airspace daily.

Iran-backed militia groups have launched multiple attacks on US assets, including the embassy compound in Baghdad and bases in Erbil. The US embassy warned all American citizens to leave Iraq.

Iraqi airspace remains closed, with a further 72-hour extension announced on March 22.

The country has lost its primary oil export route through the Strait of Hormuz and is dependent on a recently reactivated pipeline to Turkey and overland trucking for crude revenues that fund 95% of its federal budget.
