Donald Trump has extended a pause on US military strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure. In doing so, the US president is now lengthening the initial five-day halt to a two-week period.

Trump first announced the suspension on March 23, at the time citing ongoing discussions between Washington and Tehran. In the days since Tehran has denied any talks are taking place with both sides making claims on the success and non-existence of the supposed talks. President Trump, however, has recently indicated that the two sides had been engaged in productive talks aimed at achieving a full resolution to hostilities.

The original pause, which had been due to expire on March 27, will now remain in place until April 6 according to reports from the US. Trump stated that the extension followed a request from the Iranian government, although Tehran has yet to respond to this claim.

The announcement came shortly after US markets closed on March 26. Oil prices, which had risen through the day amid concerns over a prolonged supply disruption on the back of the conflict, eased following the development with Brent crude futures, which had settled at about $108 per barrel, seen trading roughly $1 lower within an hour of the announcement.
