Russia is to open a KamAZ production plant in Senegal, marking a significant step in the growing economic cooperation between Senegal and Russia. 

KamAZ, founded in Tatarstan, is known for producing trucks and military vehicles designed for harsh environments. Senegal has already received 167 trucks from KamAZ for container transport from Dakar’s port. Additionally, the Senegalese military has acquired KamAZ Typhoon MRAPs, heavily armoured vehicles capable of withstanding landmine explosions and ballistic threats.

The planned KamAZ production plant in Senegal is Moscow’s latest effort to strengthen its relations with African countries by expanding industrial and commercial ties. The agreement to open the plant was announced during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall, and was described by both officials as a deal that would bolster Senegal’s industrial sector.

The collaboration between KamAZ and Senegal has been strengthening over the past several years. In 2023, then-Senegalese President Macky Sall expressed interest in expanding cooperation with KamAZ during a meeting with Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Russia’s Tatarstan region. This followed earlier efforts in 2022, when Minnikhanov visited Senegal as part of the Tatarstan–Senegal Forum, further solidifying trade and industrial relations.

This plant in Senegal is part of KamAZ’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in Africa, where it has already established a presence in countries such as Libya, Kenya, and South Africa. Despite facing Western sanctions, KamAZ continues to invest in the continent’s infrastructure and industrial sectors, providing long-term maintenance and technical support for its vehicles.
