Unemployment in Slovakia (PDU) increased slightly to 3.97% in January. It is an increase of 0.09 percentage points compared to December and a drop of 0.47 pp on January 2023.

“Unemployment stays below the 4% line for a fifth month, the labour market is in good condition”, commented Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family Erik Tomas, adding, “it is encouraging us for further work aimed at helping people without jobs”.

Jan Komadel, an analyst at the country’s Institute for Social Policy, pointed out that the slight month-on-month increase at the beginning of the year is a regular phenomenon.

“In the next couple of months, a stable unemployment level is expected, possibly slight lowering in connection with the beginning of seasonal works in agriculture and construction,” Komandel projected.

Komandel also praised a decrease of graduates among job applicants by 400 year-on-year, which represents “a return to pre-pandemic historic lows from January 2019 and 2020”.

Overall, there were 172,833 registered job applicants and 82,295 available postings in January.
