Electricity generation in 14 small hydropower plants will be launched by end-2011, Albanian Daily News reported, quoting an economy ministry official. The new plants will have a total combined installed capacity of 50MW. Meanwhile, the ministry plans to award more hydropower concessions, as part of the governments strategy to boost the local energy production sector. As noted, authorities called tenders for 5 BOT concessions only during the last couple of weeks. Albanias power generating sector is highly dependable on water resources with some 98% of the total energy being produced by hydropower plants. The output of privately-held small hydropower plants in Albania increased by 78% y/y to 159mn KWh in 2010, but still accounted for only 2% of the country's energy generation. Currently, a total of 287 hydropower plants are operating in Albania, including 8 large and 269 small facilities with capacity of bellow 15MW.
