The Serbian embassy building in Tehran was damaged in airstrikes on Iran in the morning on March 1, but no injuries were reported, according to public broadcaster RTS.
A military base located near the embassy was among the targets, resulting in damage to the diplomatic premises.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed the incident in an interview with Prva TV, stating that embassy staff have begun withdrawing to Baku.
“We have done everything according to protocol. Documentation will be completely destroyed in line with procedures and rules,” Vucic said.
He added that the ambassador would travel to Baku, Azerbaijan, with other diplomatic staff, but he plans to return to Tehran at his own request to assist a Serbian family with a child who remained in the country.
“We want to do everything we can to help them and navigate the complex situation,” Vucic said.
The Serbian authorities have not reported any casualties among diplomatic personnel.
Serbia and Iran have friendly relations. Ties between Belgrade and Tehran were strained during the Bosnian war of the early 1990s, when Tehran backed the Bosnian Muslims, but later restored. Iran has supported Serbia by declining to recognise Kosovo, which unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
