Nigeria signs 2,600-MW solar module deal with LONGi Solar France for hydrogen hub

Nigeria has signed a 2,600-megawatt solar module supply agreement with LONGi Solar France in support of a major green hydrogen development located in Akwa Ibom State.

The agreement underpins the Green Hydrogen Hub Project situated within the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone, aiming to establish Nigeria as a regional leader in clean energy.

The project will leverage Nigeria’s substantial solar potential to drive industrial activity, enable hydrogen exports, and promote sustainable transport, particularly in the marine and heavy logistics sectors. The solar modules will power the hydrogen production processes, marking a critical step in Nigeria’s broader renewable energy transition.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, who announced the agreement, stated that the deal represents a major milestone in the country’s commitment to renewable energy and economic diversification. Once operational, the hydrogen hub is expected to generate over 20,000 direct jobs in engineering, logistics, research and development, and facility maintenance.

“This project is a beacon of Nigeria’s renewed commitment to innovation, climate responsibility, and economic transformation. It is not just a solar deal — it is an industrial leap that connects Nigeria to the future of global energy,” Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, said in a press statement.

LONGi Solar, a global solar technology company, will supply high-efficiency photovoltaic modules tailored to perform in Nigeria’s high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. The technology is expected to provide increased energy output per square metre and a reduced return-on-investment period for developers.

According to the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, the Green Hydrogen Hub is also expected to support Nigeria’s emerging blue economy by contributing to offshore energy production and maritime logistics infrastructure.
