Iran's central bank raises money transfer caps

By bnm Tehran bureau March 1, 2026
The Central Bank of Iran announced on March 2 that the daily caps for transferring funds in the banking system and making payment transactions is increased to help meet the bank customers' needs during the ongoing war. According to the bank, deposit holders are now allowed to transferup to IRR1bn using the POL instant network, two times more than the previous cap. Card-to-Card transactions now have a daily cap of IRR150mn. Bank cardholders can make payment transactions worth up to IRR4bn, while the figure was IRR2bn before. According to the CBI, transactions worth higher than IRR20bn are subject to banks' approval, decided based on the provided documents. The move was expected for a long time, mainly to the high inflation rate in recent months. The central bank usually updates the caps every one or two years. It has provided no details about the latest changes; however, the ongoing war, the expansion of demand for yearend payments and the high rate of inflation could be among the influential factors. The CBI has also announced that it has started to supply ATM machines with cash, following citizens' repeated complaints.
