Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations rejected a US-led draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, while President Masoud Pezeshkian told French counterpart Emmanuel Macron that Washington's behaviour had diverted diplomacy towards threats, pressure and sanctions, ILNA reported on May 6.

The Iranian UN mission said in a statement that the only viable solution to the Strait of Hormuz crisis was a permanent end to the war, the lifting of the naval blockade and the restoration of normal navigation.

The mission described the US draft resolution at the UN Security Council as flawed and politically motivated, accusing Washington of using the pretext of "freedom of navigation" to advance its political agenda and legitimise illegal actions rather than resolve the crisis. Iran called on member states to act on the basis of logic, fairness and principle rather than under pressure, and to reject the draft and refuse to support or co-sponsor it.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on May 5 that Washington had submitted the draft resolution to the Security Council on the orders of President Donald Trump, in coordination with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar. An earlier anti-Iran draft resolution submitted by Bahrain on behalf of Gulf Cooperation Council states (excluding Oman) and Jordan after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran was vetoed by China and Russia at the Security Council session on April 7.

In a phone call with Macron on the evening of May 6, Pezeshkian discussed regional developments, the negotiation process and the Strait of Hormuz situation. The Iranian president expressed appreciation for France's pursuit of dialogue but criticised European behaviour during previous negotiation tracks.

Pezeshkian said that during bilateral Iran-France talks in New York, understandings had been reached but the United States had obstructed progress. European countries, instead of taking a critical position towards Washington, had implemented snapback sanctions, imposing secondary pressures on Iran and shifting diplomacy from constructive engagement towards pressure, threats and sanctions, the Iranian president said.

Iran had entered both rounds of dialogue with Washington in "good faith," but on each occasion military attacks against Iran had taken place simultaneously with negotiations, conduct Pezeshkian described as a stab in the back.

He said the current US's excessive demands, threatening statements, and failure to adhere to required frameworks had added complications to the diplomatic process.

The Iranian president cited the US naval blockade and the seizure of Iranian ships as violations of international law, disruption of global trade and a form of maritime piracy that US officials had publicly endorsed.

Macron expressed Paris's commitment to continued negotiations with Iran and peaceful solutions, the Iranian readout said.

Trump said in a Truth Social post on May 6 that "Operation Epic Fury" would end if Iran agreed to terms reached in negotiations, with the US naval blockade lifted to open the Strait of Hormuz to all parties including Iran.

He warned that bombing would resume "at a much higher level and intensity than it was before" if no deal was reached.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said separately that its forces had fired on and disabled an Iranian-flagged tanker heading towards the Gulf of Oman, claiming the strike followed multiple ignored warnings, Al Jazeera reported.

Trump on May 5 paused the US Navy's "Project Freedom" operation aimed at escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, citing progress in talks. Axios reported earlier on May 6 that the White House believed the two sides were closer than at any point in the conflict to agreeing a one-page 14-point memorandum of understanding to end the war.
