Iran denies reports of former president Ahmadinejad's death in US-Israeli strikes

Reports that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was killed in the US-Israeli strikes on Tehran's Narmak district have been denied by those close to him, ILNA reported on March 1.

A person described as close to Ahmadinejad told the Iranian agency the reports were "incorrect," though they provided no further details on his condition or whereabouts.

The denial came amid conflicting accounts from what ILNA described as informed sources suggesting the former president, who served two terms from 2005 to 2013, had been killed in strikes targeting the Narmak neighbourhood in eastern Tehran.

Ahmadinejad, 70, is a current member of the Expediency Discernment Council but became distrusted by the system more than a decade ago following a spat with the previous Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 in Israeli airstrikes.

He previously served as the sixth president of Iran, as well as governor of Ardabil province and mayor of Tehran. He was appointed to the Expediency Discernment Council by Ayatollah Khamenei in 2013.

The Narmak district, a densely populated residential area of Tehran, was among the parts of the capital struck during the joint US-Israeli operation on February 28 that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military and political figures.

News reports received by IntelliNews show that several political dissidents of the Islamic Republic system, including left-wing political figures, have been targeted in recent days by unknown assailants.
