Uzbekistan introduces simplified customs corridor for Turkic states

Uzbekistan is introducing a simplified customs corridor that will apply to member countries of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the Ministry of Justice has announced.

An agreement for the simplified customs corridor was signed at the first-ever OTS summit, held by the intergovernmental organisation—grouping Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey—last November in Samarkand, southeastern Uzbekistan.

To facilitate the working of the corridor, member nations will exchange preliminary information on the movement of goods and vehicles. This will reduce the frequency and shorten the duration of customs control.

Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, addressing the OTS summit, observed that the growth of trade between the Turkic countries was hindered by high customs tariffs and stressed the need to strengthen transport connectivity.

Mirziyoyev also called for special focus on improving the competitiveness of transit corridors, introducing favourable tariffs for business and creating modern infrastructure. At the same time, he said OTS countries should switch to the digital exchange of e-permits in goods transport.

The summit saw the creation of a $500mn Turkic Investment Fund.
