Israel struck targets across western and central Iran on the morning of June 8 in response to missile strikes from Iran, defying direct orders from US President Donald Trump to avoid retaliation.

The operation followed Iranian missile launches on June 7, in which the Revolutionary Guard deployed long-range solid-fuel missiles at the Ramat David air base in northern Israel, describing the strikes as a warning and threatening wider attacks on US and Israeli targets if operations continued. The IRGC said it had used a new, upgraded missile variant. Israel's initial strikes had targeted Hezbollah positions in Beirut's southern suburbs.

Subsequent Iranian launches triggered five waves of alerts across Jerusalem and central Israel, with a further alert near Be'er Sheba. No casualties were reported, though ambulance service Magen David Adom said it evacuated a man in his 30s in moderate condition. Israel's War Cabinet convened at 11 a.m. local time to assess the situation.

Israel followed up with an additional retaliation, targeting the petrochemical complex in Mahshahr in southwestern Iran, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed in a press statement.

The Israeli retaliation places Netanyahu in direct confrontation with Trump, who had asked him to avoid striking Iran in response to the June 7 attack, according to Israel's Channel 12. Additionally, Trump told Kan News that Israel "has responded enough, no need for more" and told Axios that Washington was "very close to a final deal with Iran."

Speaking to the Financial Times, Trump was characteristically blunt about the chain of command. "I call the shots. I call all the shots," he said, adding that Netanyahu "won't have any choice" but to accept a deal.

He dismissed the June 7 Iranian strike as having no bearing on negotiations. "We'll see how it ends up," he said. "But they were attacks that did not kick at all."

Israel's War Cabinet is set to convene at 11 a.m. local time to discuss the latest developments, The Jerusalem Post reported.
