Imports account for 46% of the 307mn litres of milk consumed annually in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the SRNA news agency reported. Of the total consumption, 142mn litres belong to FBiH and 81mn litres - to the Serb entity Republika Srpska. Bosnian milk processing companies mainly produce UHT milk for the domestic market and import powder milk as well as butter and other expensive milk-based spreads, news portal biznis.ba quoted Kemal Hrnjic, deputy manager at the Bihac-based local unit of German dairy company Meggle, as saying. The statement was made at a meeting between representatives of milk processing companies and FBiH prime minister Mustafa Mujezinovic. The agenda of the event included a wide range of issues such as the quantity of state aid provided to dairy companies, possibilities for increasing exports and the risk for small market players to go out of business once the need to boost quality to comply to EU standards becomes more pronounced.
