Police officers on December 7 physically assaulted a reporter and photographer of government-run news service Anadolu Agency in Turkey’s eastern Adiyaman province, according to local media reports.
Orhan Pehlul, the reporter, and Ali Gazel, the photographer, were reportedly covering the suicide of a police officer when they were “harshly removed” from the scene.
The dead police officer was thought to have earlier in the day turned his gun on himself in his apartment.
Police and medical teams arrived at the scene after the incident. The Anadolu team then arrived at the location to follow up developments. They attempted to show their press cards to confirm their status as personnel of Turkey’s official news service.
Video: One of the news personnel recorded the incident.
However, they were met with insults and physical assaults from police officers while recording video footage of the scene. After suffering the assaults, it appears that they were prevented from receiving treatment on an ambulance that was present.
Police violence in Turkey is an everyday occurrence. However, police assaults on government personnel are newsworthy.
Also not uncommon are police officer suicides. There are many recorded instances, also, of officers shooting wives and/or other family members before shooting themselves dead. Police associations complain about long working hours among other problems.
