Turkey’s auto output up 2% y/y in February

Turkey’s auto production rose by 2% y/y to 141,372 units in February, after contracting by 3% y/y in each of the prior two months of January and December, data from the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers’ Association (OSD) showed on March 27.

Across January-February, total vehicle production declined slightly to 265,719 from 266,488 units a year ago while passenger car production fell at a higher pace of 6% y/y to 179,481 units.

Total vehicle sales in the domestic market slightly rose to 84,456 in January-February from 84,287 a year ago while export revenues rose by 19% y/y to $5.18bn despite a 3% y/y decline to 213,937 units in sales abroad.

The Turkish Automotive Distributors’ Association (ODD) previously reported on March 2 that vehicle sales in Turkey declined by 0.25% y/y to 82,085 units in January-February.

Turkey's vehicle sales declined by 2.8% to 983,720 units in 2017. The ODD forecasts that auto sales will amount to between 925,000 and 975,000 in 2018.

Turkey’s top export item in January-February was once again motor vehicles, with shipments rising 19% y/y to $5.09bn, latest data from the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TIM) showed on March 1.

In 2017, Turkey’s auto production increased by 13% y/y to a record high of 1.67mn thanks to rising exports. In 2016, the country’s automotive output increased by 9% to 1.49mn units.
