Tunisia’s unemployment rate falls to 15.9% in Q2 2013

Tunisia’s jobless rate retreated to 15.9% in Q2 2013 from 16.5% the previous quarter on higher job creation mainly in the agriculture sector and increased seasonal hiring in the services sector, helping offset rising jobless numbers in the non-manufacturing industries, the statistics office said. The unemployment rate stood at 17.6% in Q2 2012.

Some 34,100 new jobs were generated in Q2 up from 25,400 new ones the quarter before. Unemployment among males retreated to 13.3% from 13.9% at end-Q1 and 14.6% a year earlier. Unemployment among females stood at 23.0%. But the jobless rate among people with higher education remained high at 31.6% despite easing from 33.2% in Q1.

The employed population totalled 3.315mn at end-Q2, including 2.482mn males and 832,900 females.
