Slovenian MPs appointed economist Bostjan Vasle as central bank governor on December 19, STA news agency reported.

Vasle, the former head of the government’s Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development (IMAD), was nominated to replace Bostjan Jazbec who left the governor position earlier this year. Vasle was the president’s second proposal for the post after MPs rejected his first proposal.

Vasle was appointed by 51 votes in favour and 28 against. He needed at least 46 votes to get the post.

Five candidates had submitted applications to become the next governor of the Slovenian central bank. On November 30, Slovenian President Borut Pahor proposed Vasle for the post.

Vasle was appointed head of IMAD in December 2007. He was replaced by his deputy Marijana Bednas on November 29, after serving two terms as head of the institution.

Vasle graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana in 1994 and continued his studies at the Central European University in Budapest, where he completed a master's degree in monetary policy in 1997. Vasle’s professional career started at the Ministry of Finance. In 2000, he moved to IMAD, where his main areas of work were price and monetary policies.
