Serbia is close to holding a snap election after the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of President Aleksandar Vucic announced that it plans an early vote in June following four months of anti-Vucic protests.
Regular elections are due in April 2020. However, mass protests against the what protestors say it is an autocratic rule of President Vucic and his stifling of media have engulfed the country since December 8. The political situation is worsening week by week as protestors are determined to continue with their protests until their demand for early elections is met. On the other hand Vucic is certain his party will win an election due to the support it enjoys among the population.
“Elections will be held either in June or in the spring next year,” Vucic said following a session of the party's presidency.
“Elections will not be held in autumn, and it is certain that we are now much closer to voting than before,” said Vucic.
Vucic was elected president in April 2017.
