A Siberian region is to establish a sperm bank specifically tailored for childless men summoned for military service.
Natalia Strebkova, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region, revealed this plan during a meeting of the local parliament, where she underlined the “importance” of preserving “the lineage of a serviceman.”
The proposal garnered support from various quarters, including Larisa Belotserkovtseva, head of the Surgut Centre for Maternity and Childhood Protection. According to Belotserkovtseva, the sperm bank is in place and has the support of Surgut State University, but it needs to find funding.
Strebkova’s proposal isn’t unique, however. Several Russian regions have already floated a similar initiative, and it has also been mentioned at the federal level, but so far no region has been able to implement the idea.
In 2022, Igor Trunov, president of the Union of Lawyers of Russia, advocated for free infertility treatment and storage of biomaterial for mobilised men. While initial steps were taken towards implementing this proposal, there has been no serious response from Moscow. Some regional clinics have, however, taken it upon themselves to offer this service privately, with one medical centre in Yekaterinburg offering to freeze sperm at no cost for soldiers destined for the front lines.
