Passenger car sales on Uzbekistan's primary market in August more than doubled year on year, according to the Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR).

Monthly sales reached a record 37,700. The August sales figure was also up 9% m/m.

Considerable growth rates in m/m sales were observed in Khorezm (17%), Jizzakh (12%) and Syrdarya (11%) regions.

The rapid expansion of Uzbekistan's electric vehicle (EV) segment, observed since February, continued in August. During the month, 3,700 EVs were purchased. The figure was up 38% m/m and by around five-fold y/y.

bne IntelliNews has previously reported on China’s attempts to dominate and conquer Uzbekistan’s EV market. While 10 years ago only locally assembled Chevrolet cars could be seen on the country's streets, a large range of models, including EVs, produced by China's Chery, Jetour, Haval, Hongqi, XPeng, Changan, Dongfeng and BYD, are now a common sight.
