Macedonia’s public prosecutor office has opened a pre-investigative procedure against the country’s President Gjorge Ivanov to probe whether he overstepped his authority by refusing to sign the law on making Albanian an official language and the law on the name deal with Greece.
President Ivanov is close to the main opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, which is against the two laws.
The Macedonian parliament adopted the controversial language law for the second time on March 14, after the president refused to sign it the first time. The law envisages making Albanian the second official language, and has sparked criticism from the opposition VMRO-DPMNE party, which claims it will undermine Macedonia’s sovereignty and national unity.
The deal with Greece was concluded in June and envisages the change of the country’s name to North Macedonia. The deal will unlock Macedonia’s Euro-Atlantic integration processes as the country's accession was previously vetoed by Greece due to the unresolved dispute.
The pre-investigative procedure was launched following two anonymous criminal charges sent to the prosecutor office, whose allegations are now being investigated, 24vesti reported on October 30, quoting sources from the prosecutor's office.
There was no comment from the president's office.
