Lithuanian industrial production growth accelerates in January

Lithuanian industrial production grew 5.8% y/y in January on a calendar-adjusted basis, according to data from Statistics Lithuania released on February 22. 

The reading marks an uptick of 0.9pp in the growth rate after output grew 4.9% in annual terms in December.

Albeit uneven, the continuous growth of industrial production is promising for the national economy at the beginning of the year. The Lithuanian GDP grew 3.6% y/y in the fourth quarter and in 2018 overall. Economic growth is expected to moderate to 2.7% in  2019.

In monthly seasonally and calendar-adjusted terms, industrial production fell 0.1% in January, while unadjusted data recorded growth of 5.3% y/y and 4.2% m/m. In nominal terms, Lithuanian industry turned out €1.9bn worth of product in January.

The adjusted annual growth in January owes to production expanding 4.4% y/y in the most-weighted manufacturing segment, compared to a growth of 3.3% y/y in December.

Output in the utility segment grew 3.2% y/y; that compares to an expansion of 18.8% y/y in the twelfth month.

The water supply, sewage treatment, and waste management segment saw production fall 6.8% on the year in January after growth of 9% y/y in the preceding month. 

Output in mining and quarrying fell 5.4% y/y in January, the fall’s rate decelerating in comparison to a drop of 15.2% y/y in December.
