Leader of Romania’s ruling PSD reportedly considers replacing prime minister

The leader of Romania’s senior ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD), Liviu Dragnea, is reportedly considering replacing Prime Minister Mihai Tudose, according to unnamed sources quoted by Digi24.ro on January 5. Dragnea is understood to have discussed the possibility of replacing the prime minister with some fellow PSD leaders at the end of last year.

If correct, this would be the second time PSD has changed the prime minister within a year. In June, the Romanian parliament overthrew the then prime minister Sorin Grindeanu, whose relationship with Dragnea had deteriorated. Another change of premier would weaken trust in the ruling coalition, whose measures in the fiscal and judicial sectors have already been criticised by the president, business associations and foreign embassies. However, Dragnea’s personal position as party leader would most likely be strengthened.

The situation should become clearer on January 8, when a meeting of the PSD is expected to take place. The meeting might give some hints about the outcome of the power struggle within the party. According to sources quoted by Hotnews.ro on January 8, Tudose has gained ground, but he does not enjoy a comfortable majority.

According to unnamed PSD sources quoted by Digi24.ro, Dragnea told his allies within the party at a meeting at the end of last year that he no longer gets on well with Tudose and spoke about the possibility that he could be replaced.

Meanwhile, PSD executive president Niculae Badalau said on January 4 the government could be restructured, and the number of ministries cut to just 16 from the current 24, Digi24.ro has reported. A decision is due to be made at the PSD meeting on January 8.

Further discussions about a possible restructuring of the government followed the resignation of water and forests minister Doina Pana on January 3.

However, some PSD leaders fear that President Klaus Iohannis might not appoint another new prime minister from the PSD if Tudose is removed.

There is also speculation Tudose is preparing for a counter attack. According to party sources quoted by Hotnews.ro, at the January 8 meeting Tudose could propose the replacement of some ministers close to Dragnea, such as Interior Minister Carmen Dan and Justice Minister Tudorel Toader.

He has successfully executed a similar move in the past. Last year, Tudose forced the resignation of deputy prime minister Sevil Shaideh, a key ally of Dragnea.
