Kyrgyzstan received a batch of China's Sinopharm vaccine on March 19. It was flown in to Manas International Airport, the Chinese
Embassy in Bishkek said in a press release.
The Kyrgyz Ministry of Health reported earlier that the first stage of vaccination in the Central Asian nation would begin in late March or early April. Kyrgyzstan has officially registered nearly 88,000 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, though the real rate is likely much higher. The official number of deaths from the virus currently stands at 1,490.
The country held a “donation ceremony” on the day of the Chinese vaccine delivery.
Other Central Asian states that have agreed to use China’s vaccine include neighbouring Turkmenistan, where authorities have started relying on the Vero Cell vaccine produced by China National Biotec Group, a subsidiary of Sinopharm, to vaccinate citizens of 70 years of age and older against coronavirus, independent foreign-based news website Turkmen News reported on March 18.
