Japan has warned against further military escalation along the Thai–Cambodian border, urging both sides to adhere to their ceasefire commitments and return to dialogue as fighting spreads to new areas.
In a statement issued on December 8, Japanese foreign ministry press secretary Kitamura Toshihiro said Tokyo was “deeply concerned” by the renewed deterioration in relations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Kingdom of Thailand, despite the Joint Declaration signed on October 26, The Phnom Penh Post reports.
The concern shown by Japan has been voiced in capitals across the region and further afield as images of Cambodians forced to flee start to seep out.
The warning came as Thai forces widened their military operations beyond Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey into Banteay Meanchey, heightening fears of a broader confrontation.
According to The Phnom Penh Post, Japan said it opposed any actions that could further inflame the situation and called on both governments to exercise maximum restraint and honour the ceasefire framework set out in October. It stressed that a stable relationship between Phnom Penh and Bangkok was essential for regional security and economic development.
