Israel's Defence Forces attacked an alleged training compound used by Hezbollah's Radwan Force and weapons storage facilities in southern Lebanon, saying the military activity violated ceasefire understandings and posed a threat to Israel, the forces announced on January 2.

The strikes targeted several areas in southern Lebanon, with the IDF saying the Radwan Force training compound was used to conduct drills for planning and executing attacks against Israeli troops and civilians, Al Manar later confirmed.

"The terrorist's training at the compound included shooting exercises and additional drills involving the use of weapons," the IDF statement said.

The military also struck structures recently used to store weapons for Hezbollah operations. The IDF said the infrastructure sites and Hezbollah's conduct of military training "constitute a violation of the ceasefire understandings between Israel and Lebanon and pose a threat to the State of Israel".

The IDF said it would continue operations to remove any threat to the country.

Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire in November 2024 following weeks of intense fighting that saw Israeli ground forces enter southern Lebanon. The truce required Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River, while Israeli troops were to pull back from Lebanese territory.

Israeli officials have repeatedly accused Hezbollah of violating the agreement by maintaining military positions and conducting activities in areas south of the Litani. The Lebanese organisation has denied breaching the ceasefire terms.

The Radwan Force represents Hezbollah's elite special operations unit, responsible for cross-border raids and operations against Israeli targets. Israel considers the unit a primary threat due to its training and capability to conduct attacks on Israeli territory.

Israeli Defence Minister previously stated his readiness to destroy Hezbollah if the organisation threatens Israel's security. Hezbollah has accused the United States of supporting Israeli military actions against Iran and its regional allies.
