Iran flood death toll rises to seven as Red Crescent aids 23,000

The Iranian Red Crescent Society has reported seven deaths from floods in southern Iran, while more than 23,000 people affected by snow, blizzards and flooding have received support on December 19.

A Red Crescent rescue worker, was killed whilst providing aid to flood victims in the southern town of Jahrom. Six other citizens also died  in recent floods, according to the Red Crescent, IMNA reported.

In Khuzestan province, three residents of Masjed Soleiman district were caught in floodwater. Red Crescent rescue teams immediately deployed to the area, saving two people in the initial minutes. After eight days of continuous search operations, the body of a 47-year-old man was recovered on December 19.

In Fars province, two men aged 26 and 32 died in floodwaters at kilometre eight of the Lar-Jahrom road near Posht Sangar. A nine-year-old boy died in the Qir-Farashband area, and a woman lost her life in Jahrom.

In Hormozgan province's Ruydar district in Kiruyeh village, a nine-year-old girl fell into water and rescue workers recovered her body.

The Red Crescent noted that with meteorological authorities extending the red alert for southern Iran, operational teams remain on full standby.

Citizens are strongly advised to observe safety guidelines, avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and heed warnings from meteorologists and rescue workers.

The Red Crescent stated that rescue workers nationwide are at 100% readiness, particularly with the arrival of the third wave of rainfall. The public is requested to report any weather-related incidents requiring emergency assistance to the Red Crescent's 112 emergency number.

Across the Persian Gulf, several cities and countries have been affected be extreme rain and snow, unusual for this time of year. In the UAE’s Dubai, vehicles were seen driving through the Al Barsha district in more than a foot a water.

Heavy rainfall has left streets in Al Majaz, Sharjah, waterlogged, causing disruptions for residents and motorists.

 People are seen carefully navigating flooded roads as showers continue across the emirate, while authorities urge caution and advise avoiding unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

Meanwhile, wadis in Tawiyin (north of Fujairah), Wadi Bih in Ras Al Khaimah, and Wadi Shuka in the eastern region reported to be flowing, highlighting the impact of the ongoing rain, Gulf News reported.
