Intense joint US-Israeli strikes on the Iranian city of Isfahan have triggered a large column of fire, according to witness accounts and visual material captured overnight, Al Jazeera reports. The city, which has a population of around 2.3mn and plays host to the Badr military airbase, was rocked by a series of powerful explosions that illuminated the night sky and set off widespread fires.
The scale and intensity of the attacks appeared to mark a further escalation in a campaign that has increasingly targeted strategic Iranian sites even as Tehran and Washington are said to be discussing a cessation of hostilities.
Witness images on social media reposted by US President Donald Trump showed sustained blasts followed by flames rising high above the skyline, suggesting significant damage to infrastructure in and around military-linked facilities.
According to sources, the latest strikes follow a pattern of repeated attacks on Isfahan since early March. Over the past month, the city has faced intermittent aerial assaults that have focused on defence installations and logistics hubs and while earlier incidents were more limited in scope, involving shorter bursts and less visible damage, the current barrage appears notably more extensive, both in duration and intensity.
