Greek company DEPA has won the tender for natural gas supply to Bulgaria, the state-owned natural gas supplier Bulgargaz said on April 2.
This will be the first gas supplier aside from Russian giant Gazprom in the country that is known for its full dependence on Moscow in terms of gas deliveries.
DEPA won Bulgargaz’s tender, in which the Bulgarian company set the condition that the offered price must be lower than the one approved by the state energy committee for the second half of 2019.
The delivered gas will be stored in the country's only gas storage facility at Chiren.
In December 2018, the European Commission fined state-owned energy firm Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) and its gas infrastructure subsidiary Bulgartransgaz €77.1mn for blocking the access of its competitors to key gas infrastructure in Bulgaria, thereby breaching EU antitrust rules.
According to the EC, BEH used the dominant position of one of its subsidiaries – Bulgartransgaz – to protect the near monopolistic position of its other subsidiary, Bulgargaz.
