Georgia exported 38.2 million bottles of wine in the first half of 2018, a 21% y/y increase, the National Wine Agency said.
In value terms, Georgian wine exports advance even further; the value of the wine exported in January-June reached $90.3mn, up 28%.
Of the 48 countries that import Georgian wine, the largest market is Russia, which imported over 24mn bottles of Georgian wine.
Two other former Soviet countries were also among the top importers of Georgian wine: Ukraine in second place, importing almost 4.2mn bottles; and Kazakhstan, which absorbed 1.7mn.
Other major importers are China (3.0mn bottles) and Poland (1.6mn).
But some countries outside Georgia’s traditional export markets also saw a dramatic hike in the amount of wine they bought from the South Caucasus country.
Exports to Japan were up 200% to 130,638 bottles, while the Czech Republic imported 30,456 bottles, up 134%.
“Georgian wine exports have been increased in Georgian wine strategic markets both in Europe and Asia, as well as in the US and other traditional markets,” the association said.
Georgia also upped its exports of other alcoholic tipples. Brandy exports were up 23% to 8.4mn bottles, while 178,000 0.5 litre bottles of the traditional chacha liqueur were sold in 20 countries abroad, up 100%.
