Croatian shipyard Brodosplit announced on June 12 it has signed an agreement to construct a polar expedition ship for US’s Quark Expeditions.

“This project is another example of Brodosplit’s successful turnaround post-privatisation and the realisation of its visionary business plans and will strengthen Brodosplit’s position as an indispensable European shipyard, capable of highly complex and custom-designed ships for the world’s most challenging environments,” the shipyard said. Brodosplit was privatised to local manufacturing group DIV Group in 2013.

The ship, which will be built specifically for the high latitudes of the Arctic and Antarctica, will accommodate 200 passengers in 103 luxuriously equipped cabins and will be staffed with 116 crew members. The ship will be 128 meters long and 21.5 meters wide. The project is scheduled for completion in time for the 2020/2021 Antarctic sailing season.

More than 75% of the products utilised in the ship’s construction will be sourced domestically.

Brodosplit didn't announce the value of the contract, but according to Hina news agency it is worth €110mn.

On June 11, Brodosplit announced it launched a polar expedition cruise vessel for the polar region. The ship was built for Oceanwide Expeditions.
