A court in Beijing has instructed Malaysia Airlines to provide compensation of more than CNY2.9mn (approximately $410,000) for each case filed by families of passengers who disappeared in the MH370 tragedy, CNBC Indonesia reports. The total payout across eight cases amounts to roughly $3.3mn.

The ruling, issued by the Chaoyang District People’s Court, covers funeral costs, emotional suffering, and other losses endured by the victims’ relatives. The decision comes more than ten years after the Boeing 777 vanished on March 8, 2014 while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

“This judgement recognises not only the loss of life, but also the profound psychological trauma suffered by the families,” a court spokesperson told Reuters on December 8, emphasising that the compensation reflects an effort to deliver justice for a tragedy that remains unresolved.

Of the more than 150 passengers onboard MH370, two-thirds were Chinese nationals, with the remaining passengers coming from Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, India, the United States, the Netherlands, and France. China remains among the hardest-hit countries, with many families still seeking answers about their missing loved ones.

The court also reported that out of 78 original lawsuits, 47 were withdrawn after out-of-court settlements with Malaysia Airlines and its subsidiaries. The remaining 23 cases are still being heard.

Malaysia Airlines has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the judgment.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport confirmed that a renewed search operation for MH370 will begin on December 30, lasting 55 days, focusing on zones with the highest probability of locating the aircraft. Officials have not disclosed the exact search coordinates.
