By bne IntelliNews November 18, 2013

Prices of agricultural products in Kosovo grew 4.4% in the third quarter of 2013 as compared to their level a year earlier, data published by the statistics office showed. The agricultural inflation index is divided in two main price groups - crop output and animal output. Of the two categories, the crop output prices have a bigger influence on the dynamics of the index since they have the heavier weight in the agricultural basket.

The crop output prices rose 5.6% y/y in the third quarter of 2013 on higher prices of vegetables (+5.4% y/y), potatoes (+32.8% y/y) and fruits (+5.4% y/y). On the other hand, the decline in the price of cereals (-17.7% y/y) and forage plants (-2.6% y/y) had a small offsetting effect. The animal output inflation was 0.2% y/y in Q3.

Food prices account for 37.8% of the CPI basket and inflation in Kosovo closely mirrors their development. In October, the CPI was flat from the previous month, rising at an annual rate of 0.2% y/y. Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased 1.4% y/y, contributing a negative 0.57pps to the CPI.
