Cyber attacks against Czech healthcare sector up by 267% y/y in 2020

The number of cyber attacks against the healthcare sector in Czechia increased by 267% year-on-year in 2020, according to the annual report of the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office (NZS) for 2020, based on preliminary data provided by the National Cyber and Information Security Bureau, as reported by the Czech News Agency. 

The most serious incident, according to the report, was encryption of the Brno University Hospital systems by ransomware in March 2020, which limited the hospital's operations at three locations and caused damage worth tens of millions crowns. 

Other cyber attacks involved the Prague University Hospital Motol, University Hospital in Ostrava, the Regional Hospital in Karlovy Vary, the Benesov Hospital, and the Kladno Regional Hospital.

According to the NSZ report, more than 30% of attacks were caused by malicious code, with nearly half of them being ransomware, and another one-third of incidents resulted in unavailability of services, systems or web portals.
