Slovakias May retail sales decline at fastest rate in seven months.

Slovakias retail sales fell by 3.5% y/y to EUR 1.43bn in May 2011, registering their fastest annual decline since October 2010, the statistics office said. Sales have been decreasing since the start of the year, except for February when they remained flat. In April sales inched down by 0.3% y/y. Only sales of ICT products in specialised stores have been growing since January. Sales in non-specialized stores that accounted for 43.7% of the total decreased by 0.5% y/y, following a 5.9% y/y rise in the previous month. Sales of other goods in specialized stores continued to decline - down by 2.3% y/y to EUR 264.1mn. Sales of automotive fuels in specialized stores dropped by 15.6% y/y, mainly due to rising prices.
