Auto plants in Slovakia are expected to produce a record high number of 780,000 cars this year, according to estimates by the Automotive Industry Association (ZAP), TASR news agency reported. Last year, 639,763 cars rolled out from the plants of the three automakers in Slovakia, more than the pre-crisis output of 575,000 units seen in 2008. Slovakia, which is said to be the world's biggest per capita auto manufacturer, hosts plants owned by Germanys Volkswagen, Frances PSA Peugeot Citroen and South Koreas Kia Motors. The Slovak plants rank among the top quality and most advanced plants in the world and the automakers place the production of their top-notch models in Slovakia, according to ZAPs head Jozef Uhrik. The auto industry, which employs almost 72,000 people in the country of 5.4 million, accounted for 39% of Slovakia's gross domestic product (GDP) last year, up from 34.3% in 2008. |
