NATO has urged Bosnian politicians to strengthen their efforts on the completion of reforms necessary for the countrys full Euro-Atlantic integration. The heads of states and governments of NATO countries said in a statement following their Chicago summit held on Sunday that the political agreement on defence and state properties in Bosnia is an important step towards meeting the goals set by the Alliance in April 2010. Back then, NATO invited Bosnia to join its alliance's Membership Action Plan (MAP) but said it will activate the membership only when all immovable defence properties identified as necessary for Bosnias future defence purposes are officially registered as state property for use by Bosnias defence ministry. In March 2012, the political leaders in Bosnia reached an agreement on the registration of immovable defence property as state property, signaling they are ready to move the reform process forward. We welcome the initial steps taken regarding implementation, and we urge the political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina to further their efforts to work constructively to implement the agreement without delay in order to start its first MAP cycle as soon as possible, the statement said. MAP is an advice, assistance and practical support programme that NATO has designed for the individual needs of countries that wish to join the alliance. |
