Montenegro will reportedly launch EU accession negotiations at the end of next year, local media reported, quoting unnamed international diplomatic sources. Dan daily claimed that the EU foreign ministers will approve granting the country a candidate status next March. Prior to this, the European Commission should announce its opinion on the readiness of Montenegro to start accession talks (expectedly in early-November). Dan quoted its sources as claiming that the EC opinion will be positive. However, the paper noted that the accession talks will be conditioned on strengthening of Montenegro's efforts in the field of fighting organised crime and corruption. Montenegro applied for EU membership in Dec 2008. |
