Kazakhstan to ship up to 6mn tonnes of grain to China and Southern Asia.

Kazakhstan plans to ship up to 6mn tonnes of grain to China and Southern Asia , deputy PM Umirzak Shukeyev has stated. He added that that Chinese government agreed for the shipments after negotiations. No details about timing and price were revealed. Earlier, Asylzhan Mamytbekov, head of state agricultural firm Kazagro stated that Kazakhstan could ship up to 3mn tonnes to China and separately up to 3mn tonnes of grain to Southeast Asia via China . It is planned to launch shipment next year. South Korea already declared that it is ready to import 700,000 tons of grain. To remind you, Kazakhstan traditionally exports grain to nearby markets such as Iran , Caucasus and Central Asia . Some grain is also sent to Egypt and European markets. However, this year Kazakhstan harvested more than 20mn tonnes of grain, up from 15.6mn tonnes last year. Thus, the traditional importers were not able to consume all the available grain and Kazakhstan faced problems with grain transportation via Russian and Ukrainian territories (due to high tariffs, the government even subsided grain exports via railway). These facts pushed Kazakhstan to seek additional markets for its grain. Kazakhstan is expected to export 10mn tonnes of grain in 2009/10 marketing year.
