ForMin: Status of Caspian Sea is key for Kazakhstan.

By bne IntelliNews November 23, 2011
Determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea is a strategically important issue for Kazakhstan, foreign minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov has stated at the opening of 30th session of the special working group for developing the Convention on the sea. Kazykhanov noted that the Caspian Sea problem first of all touches upon the territorial issues and its settlement will promote the mutually beneficial cooperation of the littoral states. Significantly, recently the importance of the legal status of the Caspian Sea increased again as the prospect of construction of the trans-Caspian gas pipeline became more viable. Russia uses lack of the legal status of the sea to block the idea. Kazakhstan so fat took neutral stance noting that it would not join trans-Caspian project until the legal status of the sea was determined.
