Defence minister Martin Bartak signed CZK 1.1bn (EUR 43mn) contract for the supply of 8,000 firearms with local producer Ceska zbrojovka/Meopta Prerov, the ministry said in a press release. The company should deliver the firearms by 2013, says the contract, whose value turned out to be below the CZK 1.5bn, which the ministry has initially set aside. Bartak also signed a contract for 5,500 semi-automatic pistols and almost 600 automatic personal firearms for the price of CZK 130mn crowns, the military says. The ministry decided to call the tender last November in a bid to modernise the equipment of its army. Bartak defeated Belgium 's FN Herstal, represented by MPI Group.
