Social Democrats (CDDS), the major Czech opposition party, proposed next year's general and European elections to be held on the same day, CTK news agency reported. CSSD leader Bohuslav Sobotka suggested May 23-24 as an eventual date for the elections adding that holding the two polls together will save the budget several hundred millions of crowns and will also cut the costs of election campaigns. In 2014 the Czech Republic will also hold municipal elections and two-round elections to the Senate, the parliament's upper chamber. According to the latest poll of STEM agency, CSSD remained the most popular party in the country with a backing of 33%, followed by junior ruling party TOP 09 with a support of 14.3% ahead of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM) garnering 11.7%. Support for the senior ruling party Civic Democrats (ODS) hit a new record low in March with only 6.8% of the voters saying they will cast a ballot for the party of PM Petr Necas.
