US Senate urges EU to take clear stance on Serbia's membership bid.

The US senate has adopted a resolution congratulating Serbia for submitting its bid for EU membership and urged the European Council to adopt in a timely manner a clear position on the country's candidate status bid. The resolution also encourages the EU to remain committed to integration of Western Balkan states into the 27-member union. At the same time, the resolution asks the Serbian authorities to fulfil their obligation to the war crimes court in The Hague and arrest the remaining fugitives. We note that the country's EU membership bid is scheduled to be discussed in June. The country has filed EU candidate status bid in December last year. Serbia 's EU integration process has been stalled since mid-2008, when trade agreement with the EU was signed. However, it remained frozen by late 2009 due to opposition of the Netherlands , which has blocked country's further integrations due to its failure to arrest two war crimes suspects, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic. EU foreign affairs ministers removed restrictions against a trade agreement with Serbia in December last year. In the same month, the Serbian nationals were allowed to travel to the EU without visas.
