Turkey rebukes Arab nations for feeble response to Trump’s Jerusalem move ahead of Muslim summit in Istanbul

Turkey has chided what it sees as a feeble Arab reaction to Donald Trump’s decision to reverse decades of US foreign policy by recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Speaking on December 12 on the eve of a Muslim summit in Istanbul, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Reuters: “Some Arab countries have shown very weak responses [on Jerusalem]. It seems some countries are very timid of the United States.”

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who has accused the US of trampling on Palestinian claims to Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem and international law, has invited leaders from more than 50 Muslim countries in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to agree a response.

Turkey has warned that Trump’s surprise move will plunge the world “into a fire with no end”.

The Istanbul meeting must stand up to Washington’s “I am a super power, I can do anything” mentality, Cavusoglu reportedly said, adding: “We will make a call for countries that have so far not recognised Palestine to do so now... We want the United States to turn back from its mistake.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is expected to attend the Istanbul summit, has said his country would support a new uprising against Israel to “safeguard the Palestinian people’s rights”. Muslim countries would “undoubtedly voice their protest to the world” at the meeting in Turkey, he added.
